Nurturing Human Empathy in the Age of AI
Nurturing Human Empathy in the Age of AI
What humans are contending with, especially in the age of AI, is that as individuals we have limited attention, memory and perseverance. It is also necessary for us to move from traditional notions of individuals as experts to expertly marshalling team participation so that we can deal with exponentially more complex problems. We have the opportunity to expand our capacity to harness technology meaningfully by strengthening our empathy, incorporating diverse perspectives and contributions. Tapping into our humanness and creativity, we will show how observing art together (VTS methodology) can be used to practise empathy, which we can apply to how we build with and alongside AI.
In the second half of the talk, we will cover a case study demonstrating how a Cambridge start-up is applying the principles of VTS in a real-world enterprise context. We’ll explore how they think about the role of human empathy within the tech support teams that use their AI-powered solution. Despite what may be assumed, done thoughtfully, AI doesn’t replace human empathy but protects it, giving teams the time and mental space to focus on clients, build trust, and respond with care.
