Partner, Dalloway Partners
Partner, Dalloway Partners
In September 2025, Vanessa co-founded Dalloway Partners with Helen James to challenge the notion that the UK’s leadership in foundational science can’t produce super scaled companies. We work with academic and scientific founders who have innovative ideas and want to build a company at scale, and at speed, navigating some of the inherent challenges in the system. Operating at the intersection of science and academia, entrepreneurship, finance, media and government, we provide strategic advice for companies at inflection points in their growth trajectory, taking equity positions so our incentives align with founders and their investors.
Dalloway Partners is different. Our advice is not constrained to any one aspect of business growth. Having developed companies from back-of-an-envelope idea to exit ourselves, we help other entrepreneurs do the same, defining their go-to-market strategy, overseas expansion, fundraising and M&A. In short, our advice spans the non-technical aspects of scaling businesses, allowing the scientific founders to focus on what they do best: world-changing breakthroughs that will have a positive impact.
Vanessa has decades of experience helping founders create and grow technology companies. Throughout her career she has sat at the intersection of ideas and their development in a variety of roles spanning media, politics, technology, business, academia and the law. Vanessa was a co-founder of Invoke Capital which created some of the UK’s highest-growth businesses such as Darktrace and Luminance, among others. She is interested in new initiatives in health tech, particularly women’s health. She holds a number of board positions and is a Fellow of the Cambridge Centre for Science and Policy and on the Innovation Board of Innovate Cambridge and supports a number of arts organisations.

By May 2013, Pete was appointed Director of Risk Management Services. He led teams working in contract procurement, risk management/portfolio optimisation, reporting, and market research across UK and European energy markets.
Two years ensuing his journey as a Director, Pete was promoted to Operations Director in June 2015, a role he filled for a year. He presided over operational teams, including areas like contract procurement, risk management/trading, research, and pricing/volume reporting. Under his management, the energy portfolio flourished, reaching a tremendous £1.6bn.
In June 2016, Pete Nisbet took the helm of Mitie Energy as Managing Director, demonstrating his adept leadership skills over the course of four years and four months. Pete became the driving force behind Mitie's award-winning UK-based Energy, Utilities, and Sustainability solutions business, fostering significant growth in both revenue and profit. Duncan started his career in the oil industry, as a programmer working for petroleum engineers and geologists. As well as developing graphical analysis tools for engineers and geologists, he also wrote systems that allowed disparate systems to communicate with each other via marine satellite.
Duncan then moved into the financial industry, initially developing comms systems for investment banks. He then further specialised in application development in asset finance and FX derivatives trading. While at Chase Manhattan Bank (now JP Morgan Chase) he became involved in the design and implementation of trading floor and data center infrastructure and was responsible for delivery of the infrastructure and applications for the whole derivatives trading floor.
Duncan spent 4 years at RBS, running a variety of major programs, including the delivery of new HQ buildings, data centres and regulatory transformation for the Corporate Banking and Financial Markets division. In 2006, Duncan moved into specialist IT infrastructure consulting, initially at PTS Consulting (as head of the data centre practice), then CS Technology (as head of the data centre practice, then EMEA CTO and head of CST Middle East), and then as Managing Director for Align Communications (EMEA).
In 2016, Duncan was recruited to run a major transformation program for the Bank of England. This was initially intended to deliver a new data centre, but Duncan redeveloped the business case to move the entire IT estate out of existing bank buildings into two colocation data centres with improved resilience, performance and financials, as well as enabling a migration of some systems into the cloud. Designing the high-profile program took nearly two years and was, at the time, the biggest ever signed off by the Court and Governors.
Duncan joined CBRE in 2018 to set up a new digital infrastructure advisory business within the Data Centre Solutions Group. This involved providing advisory services to enterprise and public sector clients including UBS, Lloyds Bank, Heathrow Airport, Blackpool Council and Epsilon Telecoms. A key area of focus was the inter-networking of 5G and fixed fibre networks to provide peering solutions.
