Richard is an applied physicist specialising in accelerating new physics-enabled technologies from the lab bench to viable capability. His technical expertise is in applying fundamental science to understand and identify how new technologies can be used to bridge capability gaps, and to then design a system around them. Richard has led the technical delivery of PA’s activities in both quantum sensing and computing, including the “first piece of work to demonstrate quantum benefit using a NISQ machine to solve militarily important problems”. Outside quantum domain and has a particular interest in and focus on near term applications of quantum technologies. His other recent, work, outside quantum, includes the application of mathematics to the challenges of an increasingly complex and congested EM environment, development of non-linear optical systems and three separate approaches to 3D printing of chocolate.
